Oceanside Beach

Going to Oceanside with Maree and the kids twice now really brings back memories though Oceanside isn't the Oceanside I remember. But, isn't that true, you really can't go back because even things don't change in your mind - the world sure changes without any help of your own. One of these days I will get digitized all the pictures from my trips to Oceanside as a child so you can see my memories of this place. I still love to come here and could spend a week on the beach reading and playing in the water.

San Francisco - Retirement Trip

So (a little out of order, but what can you do after you start a blog in midstream) to celebrate retirement we took off the first official day of my retirement for San Francisco. We met up with Aimee and her family and enjoyed the weekend tremendously.


San Francisco wouldn't be a trip without taking in a game so we went to see the Giants get beat (ups I meant "play") the Oakland Athletics. Great weather for the game - pleasant, then cool, but not really cold until it was over. Isn't that typical weather for SF? Oh yes, I had to wear Celtics stuff since I didn't have any Oakland gear. Actually if you look close you will find I have a black and brown shirt to cover myself if needed.

Yes, we had to ride the cable car and go down to Fisherman's Wharf - for breakfast before returning to hot Fresno. Public transportation or a chauffeur (Matt) is the only way to travel in The City.
You meet some of the nicest people when you travel to The City. Look who I ran into on the street.Exploratorium - What a cool place to go visit! (Even if I did wrench my knee in the parking lot.) Anyway Barbara just couldn't wait for a regular drinking fountain. For me I got a soda - no drinking out of a toilet for me. With that we say so long to San Francisco until our next visit.

Fresno State Bulldogs - National Champs!

The Cinderella story ended tonight with the incredible victory of the FSU Bulldogs over the Georgia Bulldogs for the national championship.

Never in the history of the NCAA, in any sport, has such an unranked, unimpressive team been able to win it all. Fresno will never forget these great Bulldogs. This team is the perfect example of mind over matter and attitude can do it all.

In 12 short days, I retire, the Celtics win it all and now the Bulldogs. What a month!

San Diego Harbor Cruise

What do you do when it is too hot to even go to Legoland? You take a cruise - well not a real cruise like we will be doing in a week - but a harbor cruise. It was so much cooler there than in Poway but sunblock was really needed. What were the kids looking so intently for? I suspect a way to excape, but we adults enjoyed it.

What Do True Dogs Fans Do?

Well, mom and I, traveled 367 miles from San Diego to get home right at the first pitch of this game. I read in the Bee today about 4 FSU students who drove two days straight to get there to be in person. Now that is being an Underdog / Wonderdog fan 150% true and true. Where is Coach Hill now that we are at the place no other team with our underdog status has ever gone before? Any one, any where, any time must only go for football. Maybe he is trying to find some players like these guys - with real guts.
Anyway, yesterday's game was marvelous. I have never seen a team that just doesn't quit like this team. They get down and they just get serious. Other teams get down and just give up. One more to go - GOOOOOOOO FSU BULLDOGSSSSSSSSSSS!

Boy Is This Retro

When we stopped for gas on the way to San Diego I saw this gas pump. It isn't just old-fashioned, check out the price on it. Boy we could use gas at that price today. In the old days I remember paying 25 cents a gallon a few times shortly after I started driving. You could fill up our VW for $2.00. That won't hardly get you across town today. Oh yes, I paid $4.55 at the pump that day.

Warning - Lakers Fans Beware

When you have to wait 22 years for your team to win it all, you have to crow a little. Gosh, I retired on Friday and on Sunday the Celtics won it all in a romp. Remember I am a Celtic fan through and through. My blood runs green in my left arm and Dodger blue in the right. These have always been my teams and always will. I remember as a kid rooting for Cousey, Heinson, Russel, and all the other Celtics. Laker fans - get a center! Your turn could be next year.

Fresno State Did It !

An unbelievable baseball season continues with Fresno State eliminating North Carolina 6 to 1. So little Fresno State is in the college world series finals. No school seeded as low as us has ever gotten this far so everyone is elated. Win or loose this has been a wonderful week.

Vacation San Diego - Mom & Dad and Maree's Family

I'll go back a few minutes from the prior post (before I got arrested.) Here are Mom and I outside the Midway. The Midway was commissioned in 1945 a few days after WWII ended. It saw action in Viet Nam and the First Gulf War before being decommissioned in 1992.
A little muchkin named Hannah worked her way into this picture too.
Below is the rest of the family as we visited the Midway. The Halfdimes are Hannah, Topher, Robert, and Maree.
We thought it was warm outside but inside the ship - oh my gosh - it was hot.

Vacationing in San Diego - Busted

OK - We simply had to get out of the heat in Fresno (110 degrees on Saturday) so we go to San Diego and it is just 104 in Poway. So cool. We went down to the Midway aircraft carrier and grandpa had one too many sodas and look where he ended up.
The one good thing about the brig was that I got more room to sleep than an enlisted man has. That was nice but where is the privacy?
Could someone please pass me some tacos through the little window?
