Big ships always get an escort out of port - usually the Port Pilot. Well in New London we got that plus an armed guard - two patrol boats with manned machine guns. They were very diligent and would position themselves between us any pleasure craft that would come to close to us. We couldn't tell if this was for our protection or just so they could practice this. With the General Dynamics sub building plant and a narrow harbor entrance they may exercise extra dilligence so a big ship like ours doesn't get sunk and block the harbor. Who knows?
